Dr. Susan Bernstein

Prior to founding Work from Within, I earned an MBA at UC Berkeley, and worked at esteemed market-leading companies such as Accenture, Intel, and Franklin-Covey. My roles included marketing, management consulting and executive development. Along my path, I began to sense and observe things that troubled me about the business environment. A question arose within me: How can we approach work in a more fulfilling, resonant and alive way that harnesses our best performance? That inquiry led me on a journey to earning a PhD in Somatic Psychology (also known as Mind/Body Psychology). My business experience had felt very cerebral, yet not very embodied. I wanted to explore the wisdom of my heart, my gut, and the rest of my natural intelligence. My intention was to bring my instincts and impulses to my work and my life in a new, more satisfying way, one that I could feel from head to toe.

I wrote my dissertation on the role of embodied awareness in career transitions. My research reveals that employees frequently experience dissociation and emotional numbing at work. This leads to their discontent, illness, and eventual bitter exit from jobs they have previously enjoyed. Interestingly, when they feel less conflict, experience greater connection with colleagues, and feel as though their work matters, they expressed feeling expanded, easeful, and grounded in their bodies. By contrast, in ill-fitting situations, they felt contracted, anxious, ungrounded. Through my coaching and consulting, one thing is crystal clear to me:  When employees and business leaders bring conscious awareness to both their minds and their bodies, they not only feel more vibrant; they access and contribute much more of their positive power and potential. As a result, I infuse all of my coaching, workshops, and consulting with Smart Sensing practices, to tap into the natural intelligence that harnesses your best performance.

For over a decade, I have studied old and new embodiment practices, including meditation, yoga, expressive arts, sensory awareness, and dance/movement therapies. These practices continue to provide important insights to my initial question. Now, as a coach, consultant, and speaker, I empower professionals to trust and follow the wisdom of their instincts and impulses. As a result, they exude more deeply rooted confidence, make more richly rewarding decisions, and ultimately do work that matters to themselves and others

These days, I think of myself as an advocate for bringing your natural intelligence to work, a champion of maximizing your ROLE, and a believer that work is a lab for your life.
