Dr. Susan Bernstein’s professional biography
Prior to launching Work from Within, Dr. Susan Bernstein spent two decades guiding individuals and organizations through major transitions. She started her career at a company that was acquired by Franklin-Covey, where she trained busy professionals to move from being stressed out and too busy to getting a better hold on their work/life balance. After progressing from corporate trainer to marketing manager, she earned an MBA at UC Berkeley’s Haas School of Business.
Her next step was strategy consulting at Accenture, where she supported healthcare clients in change initiatives centered around offering more patient-focused care. Susan recognized a need to train future leaders within the firm, so she managed an advanced business management program that provided MBA-level strategy skills to a wide array of technical consulants. Her love of training lead her to an Internet start up that designed and delivered innovative training programs in MBA fundamentals to corporate universities. In 2001, a major life crisis transformed her life, and she returned to school for a PhD in Somatic Psychology at the Santa Barbara Graduate Institute. Susan’s expertise and sensitivity allow her to guide individuals and organizations through change with a focus onboth achieving results and cultivating individual and organizational well-being.

What audiences are saying
“Susan Bernstein recently led a workshop for the SF Coaches community and received extremely positive reviews from all participants. It is my pleasure to recommend her to other organizations. As a result of Susan’s workshop, coaches walked away with an understanding of how to tap into their “embodied intelligence” and to support their clients in doing the same. The approaches Susan shared can be easily integrated into a coach’s toolkit. And, most importantly to me as Programs Co-Director, Susan’s material was relevant for both seasoned and newer coaches. As a speaker she has wonderful energy, can explain complex concepts simply, and is extremely engaging.” – Nancy L. Hedley, SF Coaches Programs Co-Director
“Susan was the featured guest speaker at a professional development event hosted by the Women in Leadership Organization at the Haas School of Business. I worked with Susan to bring her to the event. From our first point of contact through to the presentation, Susan displayed an amount of enthusiasm and energy that only someone passionate about her work could have. During the event, Susan led 40 members of our organization through an informative and interactive hour and a half session focused on the connection between the body and the mind. She started the session by providing a base of research and knowledge to introduce us to the topic, then discussed real life decision points and moments when we can leverage this knowledge, and finally had us practice techniques that we can use in our every day lives to draw that connection between our bodies and minds. Susan brings a tremendous amount of knowledge and life experience to the table, which was apparent as she answered questions and helped people navigate through specific issues. Overall, Susan has a fresh and invigorating perspective on ways to achieve a sense of happiness and contentment in life that you don’t often hear. I highly recommend her as either an individual coach or as a guest speaker for a group.” – Julia Ponce Women in Leadership, Programming Manager
Susan brings a unique perspective to the issues that many ambitious, career-driven women face. I really liked how she led us away from resume-building to really thinking about what we desire in our lives. She offers perceptive questions, affirming feedback and wisdom based on personal experience. I left the evening feeling more confident that I could navigate all the changes in my life. – Jennifer Hu, Programming Chairwoman, Future Women Leaders
