Creating a Livelihood That Matters

As we mature, many of us discover that earning money is only one factor that motivates us to work. Events like Hurricane Katrina can stir up the desire for work that really matters. How do you start to create that?

Notice patterns: Make a list of events and/or experiences in your life that have felt really important to you. Think about the elements of each experience that felt really good to you.

For example, let’s take a sample experience: you helped build a house for Habitat for Humanity. As you remember that experience, you identify the key elements: as doing physical labor, being outdoors, helping a good cause, seeing the family members’ faces when the house was complete.

As you look at the elements of each experience, themes will emerge. These will give you clues about what types of groups, causes, and activities that could be the basis of more fulfilling work.

Create community: Talk to other people who are doing work that matters to them. You may find their stories inspire you, and help you overcome fears about making a transition

Experiment: Look for opportunities to do projects related to what matters to you. Non-profit agencies often need people with business skills and other talents. You might even choose to do a volunteer project as part of your vacation or sabbatical time.

I recently coached a woman who cares deeply about supporting and educating couples who are planning to start a family. We worked together to articulate a vision for a business, and she has started giving workshops to pregnant women and their partners to prepare them for life as parents.

I also coached a physical therapist who believes that healing from injuries involves more than just physical exercises. Based on our work together, she will be offering a new treatment approach that includes imagery, education, and an overall holistic approach to well-being.

Would you like to create a livelihood with greater meaning and fulfillment? I would be happy to talk with you about coaching you to clarify your vision and turn it into a reality.
